I’m Officially Leaving the Freebie Trading Industry

June 15, 2010

This is probably the hardest post I've ever had to make on my blog. However, it is a necessary post. Yes, I've made the tough decision to leave the Freebie trading Industry behind. Let me give you some background behind this decision.

I was talking with one of my business coaches via the phone, explaining to her where I am in my online business and where I was trying to go. She was extremely impressed with what I've been able to accomplish, but also extremely concerned about how much I have on my plate, considering what I'm trying to accomplish. We then came to the conclusion that if I am to really succeed, I will need to let something go. There were two options. Either leave the Freebie Industry behind, or the other stuff that I'm trying to accomplish.

Most of you know that I'm a science and math teacher. My passion is for helping people understand biology. In fact, I did a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology and a Master of Science degree in Neurobiology and I enjoy teaching the content so much that I decided to build an interactive Biology site, to teach biology using simple videos, games and other resources. I don't want to get into all of the details here, but if you want to check it out, you can visit my Interactive Biology site to see what I've been up to.

When I weighed the two (Freebie Industry and my Interactive Biology Site), I truly believe that I can contribute much more value with the biology site and help out more people doing that. However, I also had to consider the fact that the Freebie Industry is making me money right now and the Biology site isn't. At that point, I had to ask myself the question – What is more important to me, Making More Money now or helping more people over the long run? The answer to that question was obvious to me. Money is good, but it's not what REALLY matters to me. When I die, I'm not taking any money with me to the grave. However, if I can affect more lives in a positive way, then my life would not be in vain.

In addition to everything, I'm starting a second Master's degree (in education) in 3 weeks and that will be taking a significant amount of my time.

The Freebie industry has been great to me. I've learned a lot, met some GREAT people (I was going to name some, but I didn't want to miss anyone), and have been able to help a lot of people (at least I hope I have). I think that there is still a lot to happen in the freebie industry, and based on some recent discussions, I think that things will get even better over time, and I wish all of you the best who are still involved.

I'm Selling Most of What I have

What will Happen with TheFreebieGuy.net?

That's a good question. At first, I thought about selling it. However, I've decided to keep it and just use it to document what I've learned, and am learning, in terms of building an online business. Since I will no longer be promoting the Freebie Industry, I'm removing that content from the blog, and will be solely focusing on showing what I've learnt and am learning as I build my new business. However, if someone makes me an offer I can't refuse, then I can't refuse it ๐Ÿ™‚

As you can see, a lot has gone into bringing what I have to where it is right now. From building this blog, to adding the forum and the Freebie Network, to partnering with other bloggers, interviews, being featured on MSN Money and working on traffic generation, I've learned a lot and have established a lot. However, I tend to think that God had me go through all of these experience for me to learn things, and use it to do bigger things. As I leave the industry, I know there will be mixed emotions. Some people will be sad, even disappointed, and maybe even happy (hopefully not). However, know this. I've enjoyed my experience, and wish NOTHING but the best for each and every one of you. Remember this, you can do anything you put your mind to, but you have to believe in yourself and be willing to work your behind off to accomplish your goals.

If you have any questions, comments or well wishes, I invite you to leave them in the comments section below. All the best!

  • Hi Jawhite,There are many trustworthy mentors in the Freebie industry. I don't want to mention any, because that would be unfair to many of the other good mentors. I would encourage you to just look through the forums and get to know the mentors based on the way they carry themselves.Trust me, there are many good people in the industry. Just do some research and you can find yourself some good people.

  • Jawhite1964 says:

Leslie,I am just trying to get started, so am a 'newbie' to the freebie industry. I got involved in the first place because your efforts convinced that this is worth spending a little development time on. But now that you are getting out just as I am getting in, thew important thing to me is to have someone else who is just as knowledgeable, helpful and reliable that I can trust and learn from. Will the sort of encouragement and real-world example continue, and where can I turn as I seek to develop and make money with Freebies?

  • Thanks H.D. My grandmother gave me that name. At first I didn't like it because I thought it was a girls name, but then it grew on me, lol. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog, and it's not going anywhere, so there will still be stuff coming to read :)Blessings!

  • Thanks Diana. I wish you all the best too. Keep chugging along!

  • H.D says:

Leslie,I don't think I ever told you that Leslie is my grandfathers name. A really lovely name and so unique…Anyhow, I think there does come a time when you are working online and need to look at the benefits of spending most of your time in a virtual world as opposed to spending time hands on with others….You have done great and now you are moving on to something that you feel is important. Many blessings to you and thanks so much for all you have shared and taught us.

  • H.D says:

There are alot of great mentors that will help you out, Jawhite:) like Leslie said, go to the forums and peak around, look for someone you like and then see how it goes for you.

I wish you both nothing but success in what endeavor you persue. I have learned much from you Leslie over the last year and thank you for that. You and Chris will be greatly missed and Cali will never be the same. As you say money is nice but…in life we must follow the path that gives us the most joy and satisfaction, we should not stand in one place for to long when there is much to be learned while we are on this earth. With sincere regrets I wish you both only the best. Suzanne

  • Amanda234 says:

I don't get it, why would you leave something that is making you money, and both of you at the same time? Can't you hire employees to run your website and not have to sell it?

  • Vanessa says:

Leslie, I am fairly new to freebie trading (about 4 months or so) but my experience has been a good one at Calistyle . I wanted to let you know that I can appreciate your decision and agree with you entirely when you say that you would rather be helping people and pursuing your passion . Life is about moving forward and upward … Good luck on your journey!

  • Thanks Suzanne for your best wishes, and of course, I wish the same for you!

  • It's not always about money Amanda. What you are suggesting does make sense and not an impossible venture. Time will tell how it all works out.

  • Thanks Vanessa. It definitely is a journey, with a destination, and maybe some scenic routes along the way :)All the best to you too!

  • Amanda234 says:

Can you also tell me why, if you want to stop freebie trading because of your other website. Why is chris leaving as well is there something you arn't telling us? I am really worried about my future income…

  • There's really nothing that I'm not telling, or hiding. When Chris and I got into this, we got in together. Actually, with his job, he has been even busier than I have. This was a mutual decision. Also, Amanda, you need to realize that your future income is more dependent on your efforts than anyone else. Really, if you put your mind to online success, you can achieve it.
