Top Affiliate Marketing Advice for Newbies

March 2, 2009

Today’s tough economy demands that we all become more creative with earning money. Whether you’re looking for a way to make extra cash or dreaming of starting your own full-time business, online income opportunities like affiliate marketing can help you get started on the way to meeting all your financial needs.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Given the ruthless competition with Google ranking these days, every online business needs all the help they can get. Affiliate marketing is the practice where a business will ask another entity (a related or unrelated site) to help promote their product or service. Interested visitors who click on an affiliate advertisement link will be redirected to the original business’s website to process their orders. If you’re looking for another way to earn money without being stuck in another eight – hour job, this online marketing program is a good way to get more income within the comforts of your own home.

The sad fact is that most income opportunities turn into scams. They promise to teach you everything and then get you into a “membership” course, but you don’t really get your money’s worth. Here are some tips to help you decide on an affiliate program that’s right for you:|

1. One size DOES not fit all.

It pays to read about affiliate marketing extensively and get the best program reviews possible. Though they may all offer similar training techniques, not all affiliate programs follow the same method. Respectable affiliate programs offer more than just a couple of reading materials and CDs. They should be there from your first sale to your latest successful payoff.

2. Avoid ‘Get Rich Quick’ programs.

Though some testimonies are valid, some success stories that sound too good to be true are probably not. It takes some work and patience to succeed with attracting and keeping potential customers. Don’t be fooled into thinking that all of it will just run on ‘auto-pilot’. If you do your research right and put in the necessary work, you can have a bigger chance of succeeding. Take the time to choose the best products and services. Don’t jump into too many different markets at the same time.

3. Don’t be discouraged if some products do not deliver.

If you want to have stable and multiple income streams, be prepared to wait. You will need to build your reputation and promote your site well to make things happen. Stay up to date with the latest marketing techniques and seek the help of qualified people to improve your sales.

4. You DON’T need to spend a ton on training.

There are plenty of legitimate experts on the web who practically give away their knowledge for free. In fact, successful affiliate marketing programs thrive on the spirit of mutual support. Just seek the best affiliate sites to get sound internet marketing advice. Your business will need the expertise of real people who have road tested proven methods to make real money pour in.

This is the number ONE punch line for most (if not every) affiliate marketing business. People will get curios about what they say and then keep on reading. And then people read about their testimonials, get convinced and then people join the program… The next day or two these people then flood messages on forums that they have been SCAMMED! -_-

I wish Google would someday create a TrustRank aside from the PageRank.hehe

I’d say that another thing you should do is try to sample the products you are promoting before you begin. If you are just going to be driving pay per click traffic and have no relationship with the people you send to that affiliate offer then it doesn’t matter, but if you are trying to make money through your relationship with readers of your blog or email newsletter then you need to make sure you only send them to quality information and quality products.

Sending them to something that’s junk but will make you money will only kill your relationship with your readers and they’ll no longer trust you for future offers.

But, like I said, if you are sending PPC or random traffic and not trying to do anything else with them, then go where its profitable.

    • Very good point. If you are promoting crap to your readers, you are hurting the relationship, and that’s not good for business.

Good Information Leslie! I have been exploring affiliate marketing and just starting to get into it. I have a 6 month plan so I really don’t expect to see much income in the beginning. That’s what I have freebie Trading for!! Having Freebie Trading allows me to still have income coming in while building my business into affiliate marketing. I think it works very well as the next step for those who have learned the Freebie Trading business.

I completely agree with Blaine-I don’t believe in promoting anything unless I know it is a good product. Otherwise your readers and subscribers will lose faith in your integrity.

    • Excellent point Onna. That’s the exact model I work with. Using Freevie Trading to provide income that supplements other bigger venture is a very smart idea in my opinion. If you are making an extra few hundred to a few thousand dollars, that gives you the ability to explore other options. I love that system 🙂

    • I definitely agree with you there. No such thing. If a program claims to be that, RUN WITH THE WIND, lol!

You said it correct Stefanomen. Traffic + Conversions = MONEY!
Patience is essential if you want to make money online. There is absolutely no way around that. Actually, no matter what you try to do to make money, it will take patience (and a bunch of other stuff).

Does wealthy affiliates offer any kind of trial offer?

I am interested in finding out more, but would really like to see everything they have to offer first hand prior to signing up for a monthly fee.

    • Leslie says:

They don’t have a trial offer. Their philosophy is that they let you know EXACTLY what you are getting up front, so there are no surprises. Do a search for them online though. I haven’t really found any bad reviews. It’s good stuff!

Leslie is right! Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best programs out there. I searched online for Wealthy Affiliate also before joining and I could not find one bad review. I found about freebie trading in November and about affiliate marketing and WA in December. You made a good point, an affiliate program should be able to take you from startup to profits. For a completely new person to affiliate marketing, I have been able to use the information from WA, and have made 3 sales and earned $100 in commissions.

Another tip I would like to add for newbies – it is worthwhile to start with free techniques (e.g. article marketing) to making money before jumping the gun to paid methods. You will learn a lot of the grunt work to affiliate marketing here. You have nothing to lose and you can use the information you learn from your successful articles to build a successful PPC campaign.

The beauty of Wealthy Affiliate is you can learn how to successfully do all these things in one spot. Plus, the information being shared in the forums is awesome!

    • Thanks Kemi, that actually gives me an idea for another post. There are a bunch of forums out there with great info. I think I will do a top Internet Marketing Forums list. They can be great resources.

    Great Post Leslie,

There are many great affiliate programs out there. The best ones I believe, are the ones that allow you to make residual income. You can make alot of money selling a single product to people however chances are, they only buy it one time and move on. This takes alot of continued work. However, if you are promoting products that pay residuals then you can make money from the same customers over and over again.
