10 Ways to Get Referrals for your Freebie Sites

February 12, 2009

There's a lot to say about this topic. It has been a hot topic in the Freebie Forums for a while. Everyone is wondering about ways to get referrals, because More Referrals = More Money. It's one of those simple equations that make sense. The problem many people have is that we grow so dependent on one method, that we sometimes loose sight of the MANY different ways out there for getting referrals.

So I decided to compile a list of different ways to get referrals. Now, I haven't used all of these methods perfectly, but I do intend on branching out as time goes on. My philosophy is that it's good to perfect one or two ways, and then move onto implementing another. This will basically result in a constant stream of referrals on a regular basis. So lets get into those different ways:

Freebie Forums.

Freebie Forums are an EXCELLENT place for a beginner (and even advanced trader) to get referrals. There are a number of great freebie trading forums out there. Of course, a great place to start would be www.CaliStyle101.com. However, there are other good forums out there such as Free Lunch Room, Referral Swapper and Anything4Free.

Email Signatures.

You know what it is, you use them all the time. I receive emails from people who in their signatures say something like “Find out how I made $1,000 last month online”. I'm not going to lie. Every so often, I get curious and click the link. This won't get you tons of referrals, but it can definitely get you some every so often and does not take ANY extra work. How many people do you know that would like to get a FREE ipod.

Craigslist.

This is a touchy one, because there are some strict rules that you need to follow, but some of the people I know who get the most referrals for Freebie Sites, get them from Craigslist. I'm not going into the technique of it in this article, but I will do that hopefully soon. Just know that there is a lot of potential using craigslist.

Social Networking Sites like Facebook, myspace etc.

Social networking sites are the wave of the present. They are spreading like wildfire and are a very fun and exciting way to connect with the rest of the world. Because of this, they can serve as a great platform for connecting with individuals and getting referrals.

Friends and Family.

This is one that I try not to do, but it definitely works to get you going. The reason I try not to do it is because I like to keep my business and and personal lives separate. However, I know of some people who got a great jump start by referring people they know.

Offline Marketing.

This is another huge one. In this economy today, people are desperately looking for ways to make money. Putting up Fliers, handing out business cards, advertising in the Sunday newspaper – these are all great ways of getting the word out there and getting referrals.

Blogging.

You are here at my blog. I'm not sure how you got here, but you are obviously here. This blog gets me referrals on a regular basis. Blogging is great because it can generate good traffic, and if you do it right, it can bring a good amount of referrals.

Traffic Exchanges.

This is one I haven't tried, but it can be good for, yes you guessed it, driving traffic to your website, which can then be converted into referrals if you play your cards right.

Article Marketing.

This is another strategy that many internet marketers use. You can write articles and submit them to article directories, with the idea that having articles out there for the world to see can get you traffic that you can convert them into referrals.

Google Adwords.

The difference between this method and the others is that this one actually costs money. You are actually getting Pay Per Click (PPC) traffic. Meaning you are paying people to check out your website and this can work out well, if you know what you are doing.

With almost all of the above mentioned ways of getting referrals, one important thing is that you need to have your own Website that teaches your potential referrals about the Freebie Trading Industry. If you are thinking about using the methods above, I would recommend for you to get a Free Mentoring Site, that basically does a lot of the training for you.

Also, if you have other suggestions of ways to get referrals, I invite you to leave them below. People want to know 🙂

I have used safelists in the past mainly for building a downline in other ventures. Depending on the safelist you use will determine the effectiveness of your campaign. I have had some marginal success using them.

Ahh yes, the good old safelist. I haven’t ever used them, but have heard of them. That would be another way of getting more potential referrals.

lol, this was exactly what I was going to write out for your guest posting, but I guess I’ll come up with another topic sometime.

Anyways, Craisglist is probably not a good example. Yes, I suppose people do use it (like ebay) but it violates their guidelines and thus your account can get banned. Not only on ebay, but I’ve heard some people’s freebie accounts get placed on hold too.

Another method people use is youtube (and other video sites). Probably not a good idea to include a “walkthrough” though if you do this.

Lastly, links in email signatures are not always allowed, especially not to promotional sites. So be sure to always read the site’s terms.

I know this is a very late response, but what I did about a year ago before i started blogging for freebies is use craigslist. A good way to get referrals on craigslist that doesn’t violate the guidelines is do what I call Skill Trading..

I used to go to the “GIGs” section where people have odd jobs offered or help required. I answered an add for a women who needed a complicated logo design but couldn’t afford to pay more than $100. So i contacted her and told her that I could give her a much better deal.. “I’ll do your design free of charge if you and 3 friends can complete an offer under my link, cause im trying to get a free macbook pro..!” Within 2 days, I got more referrals from her and i did her design.

That’s How I used to utilize craigslist for referrals and I’ve been successful every attempt.

I just printed up a bunch of posters to put of at local colleges–we’ll see how that goes, I’ll let you know!

I have gotten a couple of greens from friends and family. I try not to be a salesperson to the people in my personal life, but when I see that someone I know is in need of money, I feel compelled to tell them about freebie trading. It seems wrong NOT to share an opportunity to make money with someone who needs it.

The forums are definitely the hotspot for getting refs, but unfortunately, there is a LOT of competition, so it’s hard to get your momentum on those, but once you do, they seem to be the most reliable way to get refs.
